The History of Count Weirdly

I believe this is the first Dr. Weirdly strip, from May 1987. Weirdly really went hog-wild with the generic mad scientist theme with the medieval dungeon laboratory and Frankenstein’s monster. He presumably didn’t think Max was worth the bother of locking up, or perhaps Max was actually useful back in his youth and infiltrated the lair without detection. You may also notice that Weirdly is the only one practicing proper laboratory safety procedure by wearing shoes.

1987-1991 Dr. Weirdly wears a suit and cape really similar to Slylock. Personally, I’m glad he stopped ripping off Slylock’s style and got his own since then. The charming character in the center is early Shady Shrew. It’s implied that he is Weirdly’s henchman, but they’ve since parted ways so they can cause twice as much mayhem.

Anyway in 1992 Dr. Weirdly got a makeover to closer to what he looks like today. The scientific community cracked down on him that year for not being a “real” doctor. Never mind that he’s invented a time machine and probably contributed more to the field of science than these loser ethical, ivory tower PhDs. To get them off his back, he changed his title to Count. No one’s challenged his aristocratic heritage so far so the name stuck.
